A poker tell is a repetitive habit, behavior, or physical reaction, that gives other poker players more information about your hand. Here are some tips on poker tells that will give you an insight on how to recognize your opponent's play.
1. Facial expression and the eyes
Opponents are always trying to study your face for twitches, tweaks or other nervous tics in order to determine what poker strategy you are going to use. Eyes are also known to mirror your feelings. That is why many pros cover their eyes with sunglasses or a low cap so that nobody can read their faces or eyes.
In high tension games such as poker, there is bound to be some anxiety. This may lead to physical changes such as flexing of muscles, eye pupil dilation, palpitating heart rate, dry throat among others. In poker, when someone has a big hand they are ready for confrontation and may display some of these characteristics. During a bluff, the player may reveal anxiety. Shaking or trembling hands may also mean that the player has a solid hand.
3. Continuous glancing at the chips
It is common poker strategy for players to keep glancing at their chips if they connect with the board after a Flop. This may be a spontaneous reaction, but it is a classic poker tell declaring that the player is already planning his attack!
The body posture of some poker players changes depending on their attitude and/or their hand strength. For example, a player's shoulders might slump when they have a weak hand. Conversely, you may notice the player is very attentive and sitting in an erect position when he has solid hand.
